The restaurants in the “Carré d’Or” – Golden Square tended to be a lot more low key than those in Old Town, and by that I mean a show of more local than tourists, and prices that were more reflective of the quality. Le Sens was one such place. Though it cropped up on searches for Nice restaurants and had a great deal of tourist-centred reviews it still had a feeling of “hanging out with the locals”, which suited us just fine. What surprised us even more though was the quality of not only the food, but the incredible service we received, but what was seemingly such a low-key place.
Started the evening off with the mandatory “coupe de champagne” at the bar while we waited for our table. An amuse bouche of candied peach with hibiscus flower and yoghurt ice-cream set the tone for what would be more than just a low-key meal. A starter of pan-fried calamari, mussels and a grilled prawn in a creamy sauce, served on a bed of iceberg lettuce, was followed by tender lamb in what tasted like a balsamic reduction served with a mushroom ravioli, and a grilled turbot on asparagus. Dessert was a the dessert of the house, a delectable orange soufflé.
All this in a cosy restaurant, with friendly staff and a casual ambience with a mix of holiday-makers and locals. Loved, loved, loved Le Sens,
