This one we had been looking forward to since arriving in Nice. I had read some really good reviews prior to coming and it was on my list of restaurants to try whilst in the South of France. This along with the gem called “Jan” owner run by South African chef: Jan Hendrik . We didn’t make it to Jan, but managed a reservation at Keisuke Matsushima in the Carré d’Or. The man known as ‘Kei’ has built himself quite the name in the foodie circles of Nice, and it was truly an experience eating there.
The maître d’ was rather surprised to see us turning up with our children – he probably would not have believed it if I’d told him my nine-year old ‘aspiring foodie’ son had already googled and read all that was to read on Chef Kei. He was looking forward to this meal more than we were.
Professional service, not pretentious in any form, in what is a truly well-rated and upmarket restaurant in Nice. An eclectic and colourful plate of amuse-bouche started off our evening. Starters of prawn on a lentil broth, and a duck foie gras on a Provence nougat with summer fruit – figs in this case. Everything tasted light and perfect, with the only complaints being they finished just too quickly. Mains were the duck breast with a chutney of red berries, lamb cutlets on a barley risotto, and a Loup “fish and chips”, which was the fish baked in a crust of mash potato. Again, such morsels of servings! By the time we got around to dessert though, it did not feel as though we had had bite-sized servings of the really good food. The dark chocolate mousse with saffron, a passion fruit jelly and sorbet, as well as a refreshing bowl of mixed berries, infused with rose water and topped with a vanilla sorbet. By the time our coffee was brought around, with yet another complimentary plate of mini macarons, turkish delight and marshmallow – we were all surprisingly too full to even taste those.
A wonderful evening, which was a true gastronomic delight. I would return again.
