I had not been to the Silver Orange Bistro since almost seven years ago, so it was a pleasant surprise to find that the service is still friendly – if a bit slow – and the quality of the food has remained as I remember it.
Family lunch on Boxing Day was a slow meal of meat dishes. The Silver Orange Bistro menu is meat heavy, with a seared salmon, stuffed chicken and duck breast dish to vary things just a bit. Shots of muscadella on ice warmed our stomachs immediately, as we nibbled on the dried work sticks and bread drizzled with a balsamic reduction and served with a spoonful of hummus. We started with lamb samosas and snails in a creamy garlic sauce. Both were tasty and well-presented. Presentation seems to be everything at the Silver Orange. I unashamedly mopped up the creamy garlic sauce – which was not heavy and almost gelatinous – as I have found some creamy sauces to be. It was served with pieces of brioche bread, the sweetness of which added another layer of taste when eaten with the sauce.
For mains, my son has the other non-red meat dish on the menu: farfall pasta with a mediterranean ratatouille, and the rest of the family went with the béarnaise and bacon filet, served on a beetroot and potato mash, and the filet tail with peppercorn sauce. As if that was not enough, we went on to have dessert which included their rooibos malva pudding; orange and honey cheesecake; chocolate spring rolls with vanilla ice-cream, and a chai-infused crème brûlée – which was the only disappointing choice of the entire lunch.
The ambiance is relaxed and with a mixed clientele of young and old. Reservations are highly recommended.
