Sure, not quite the village, but close enough. That’s how I always feel when in Parkhurst though – small cutesy shops and restaurants in such a pleasantly laid back part of Joburg that it’s easy to forget that the bustling city is but a stone’s throw away.
One of the first places we tried after our too long hiatus was Bistro Vine. This was new to me. It is directly opposite the old George’s in 4th location- that fantastic Parkhurst institution that closed many years ago. Bistro Vine serves up French food, with a contemporary mix and everything else in between. Think duck- that old French staple- alongside burgers, peri-peri chicken livers, grilled calamari with noodles, beef filet with sides of sweet potato, and crème-brûlee for dessert.
It boasts an extensive wine list, with some French wines if the Francophile in you is that way inclined. Reservations are a must for those weekend lunches. The service is friendly and efficient.
I love the outdoor pavement seating, reminiscent of the typical French-style pavement dining and people-watching. We went a second time subsequently, and the food was still consistently good. Highly recommend for those long, lazy weekend lunches.
